Having been developed in 1998 by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) the LEED building classification programme has evolved to become one of the most important, voluntarily quality examinations of the world in the area of environmentally friendly, low-pollutant and low-emission and sustainable building.

October 2014: Extension of LEED 2009 till October 2016

On Oct 29, 2014, the US Green Building Council (USGBC) announced it will allow LEED user to register projects under the LEED 2009 rating system until Oct 31, 2016. The original date for LEED 2009 registration to close was June 2015.

This extension gives the sustainability industries to prepare for LEEDv4, the latest LEED version being published around a year ago.

NEWS: LEEDv4 published

October 2013: LEEDv4 has been published now. At GREENBUILD Internation Expo in Philadelpha (November 20-22) the new programme of US Green Building Council (USGBC) will be launched and presented in full detail. Further infos

The new LEED is fit for use from now on, the criteria of the "old" LEED programme are valid for a transition period till 2015.

NEWS: LEED v4 approved!

July 2013: LEED v4 has now been approved and will be published in November 2013. The requirements on emission from products to be met are based now on the California Section 01350, and on the BIFMA criteria for office furniture. GREENGUARD GOLD certified products meet as well these emission requirements. For projects and products outside of the US, the German AgBB scheme can be applied, for formaldehyde the value of the French VOC regulation with the classification A+ will be valid. Additional credit points can be covered by UL products such as EPDs (Environmental Product Declarations) and ECVs (Environmental Claim Validations).

NEWS: LEED partially accepts European test methods

July 2012: After an addendum in July LEED now partially accepts Eurpoean test methods like AgBB/DIBt, GUT, EMICODE, Blauer Engel. However, this only applies to LEED projects outside USA and only to floor coverings in the following rating schemes: LEED-NC (New Construction & Major Renovations), LEED-CS (Core and Sheel) and LEED-EB (Existing Buildings)

NEWS: "LEED v4" in development

4th June 2012: The building certification programme LEED is in revision. The new version "LEED2012", how it was to be called, was planned to be published by the end of 2012 but the relaunch of the LEED programme has been now postponed to 2013 (now called "LEED v4") as the USGBC has announced on June 4th 2012. On July 1, 2015, the eco-INSTITUT-Label has been recognised by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) as an officially accepted compliance path for the LEED v4 EQ Credit for Low-Emitting Materials.
