On behalf of the Californian working group for sustainable building of California's Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery (CalRecycle) in 2002/2003 that specification has been developed which is now known as the California Section 01350. The Section is the most important standard in the US concering the evaluation and reduction of VOC emissions in indoor air. By now the specification is integrated into further programmes such as  FloorScore® or LEED . The last revision of CA Section 01350 took place in 2010. 

Measurement and evaluation

After 10 days of storage, VOC and formaldehyde emissions are measured after 11, 12 and 14 days and then calculated (for two reference spaces: a class room and a open-space office) in terms of temperature, relative humidity and ventilation. The resulting air concentrations are finally classified according to the Chronic Reference Exposure Levels (CRELs) of the California Office of Environmental Health Hazards Assessement (OEHHA), according to the principles of the Section generally no more than half of the CREL's extent is to be emitted.
