Sustainability certification for furniture

In 2006 the first concensus-oriented US sustainabilty standard for furniture was developed. On the basis of ANSI requirements on furniture more than 100 parties contributed to its developement, today the certification is awarded already in following version e3-2019 Furniture Sustainbility Standard. It is wawrded in three categories 1, 2 and 3.

All level® labelled products are listed in a data bank.

End of 2016 BIFMA level® programme was implemented in guidelines and recommendations of requirements for public federal US procurement.


BIFMA

The Engineering Committee of the Business and Institutional Furniture Manufacturers Association (BIFMA), having been founded in 1973, developed following the guidelines of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) the ANSI/BIFMA Safety and Performance Standards für office furniture.

Standards such as ANSI/BIFMA X5.1-2017(General Purpose Office Chairs), X5.5-2014 (Desk and Table Standard), X5.6-2016 (Panel System Standard), X5.9-2012 (Storage Unit Standrd), ANSI/BIFMA X7.1-2011 (Emissions Standard), M7.1-2011 (Emissions method) and  more are revised every five years and accordingly adapted and refined.

Also new standards are steadily developed. The respective standards en detail may be directly orderd from BIFMA.
