The restriction has been in place since 3 February 2021 and aims to reduce emissions of nonylphenol ethoxylates (NPEs) into our environment.
When clothes and other textiles containing these chemicals are washed, their residues enter the environment through wastewater. NPEs are toxic to animals and plants that live in our surface waters.

The restriction will prevent 15 tonnes of NPEs from entering surface waters each year and reduce pressure on biodiversity.

More information on the restriction can be found on ECHA’s page here.
